Punch, the president of Top Dawg Entertainment, recently sat down and revealed what he knew about Kendrick Lamar’s move from TDE after being a part of the label for nearly 20 years.
“He’s reached the pinnacle,” Punch said. “He’s one of the greatest artist of our generation, so it’s time to build his own thing.”
Here’s why Kendrick left TDE: Punch states that the main reason Kendrick left was so that he could build his own thing and have more freedom over what he can create.
“We watched him grow from a teenager up into an established grown man, a businessman, and one of the greatest artists of all time,” Punch said. “So how long do you actually be signed up under somebody? It’s been almost 20 years.”
Punch also says that Kendrick has matured artistically, which is why he wants to leave TDE. He stated that at first their goal was to make beats for Kendrick, but now he wants to focus on other things.
“He wants to make his own decisions,” Punch said about Kendrick leaving TDE. “Growth is natural, it happens every day.”
